Minor Ailments Service

What is the minor ailments service?

This is a service that allows you to come direct to your community pharmacy to get free advice and treatment for common minor illnesses such as:

  • colic, head lice, threadworms, allergy in children,
  • or indigestion, diarrhoea, cough, haemorrhoids in adults.

This means that you do not have to attend the GP surgery to get a prescription.

If the pharmacist thinks you need a medicine or treatment which does not need a prescription, you don’t have to pay for this.

You don’t have to make an appointment with the pharmacist, just pop in whenever.

You may still have to go to your doctor if you may have a more serious illness, or need medicine that you can only get with a prescription.  Your pharmacist will advise you if they feel it is appropriate for you to see your doctor.

Who is the service for?

You can use this service if you don’t pay prescription charges (this doesn’t include pre-payment certificates).

How do I register?

You can register for the service at any time. You can do this before you have to use the service, or the first time you need advice or treatment.

Registration is simple – just tell us you wish to register and we will print out necessary paperwork then all you have to do is sign and date the registration form.
